Older readers will readily recall the title Stargate SG-1. Premiering all the way back in 1997 and ending 10 years later in 2007 after a 10-season run totaling 214 episodes (plus 2 direct-to-DVD movies and a “Final Cut” of the first episode), this sci-fi TV series ended up acquiring a massive and dedicated fanbase over the course of its long run. The fact that this TV series was, for a short time, the longest-running sci-fi TV series in North America is a nice cherry on top for the fans to enjoy.

Alas, after the Final Cut of the first episode made its debut in July 2009, the Stargate franchise just sort of…languished in limbo. Various sequel series in the form of Stargate: Atlantis (which was still good) and Stargate: Universe (which wasn’t good) followed SG-1, but failed to capture the magic in one way or another. The last time we saw a Stargate anything in TV form was back in 2018 when MGM released Stargate: Origins to decidedly negative reception. The Stargate franchise then went dark, with only vague mentions hinting that it might not be entirely dead. This went on for years until at long last, as you can tell by the title, Stargate is now returning.

Variety has just reported that there is now a new Stargate TV series in the works at Amazon, and Jac Schaeffer will be the showrunner. Fans of WandaVision and its sequel / spin-off Agatha All Along will readily recognize Schaeffer as the creator of both TV series for Disney+. In addition to Schaeffer, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will be joining the production as executive producers for Safehouse Pictures. Not only that, but a writer’s room will even open in the near future, according to sources.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any more information about this future Stargate TV series. No release window or anything. We will have to wait for Amazon to give us more info about that at a later date.

A New Hope for Stargate?

Honestly, this has been a long time coming. Stargate has been quiet for so long that so many fans, including myself, assumed that it was dead and forgotten. This was especially true after the disaster that was Stargate: Origins in 2018. After getting only 19% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, it sank so many hopes that a new Stargate series will happen.

Now though…we may have a new hope for Stargate. Solely due to Jac Schaeffer being the new showrunner. WandaVision and Agatha All Along are both critically acclaimed TV series, featuring excellent writing giving us mind-bending stories. So with her as the showrunner, the chances of us getting a really good Stargate TV series seem very high. It’s easy to imagine a Stargate series with WandaVision‘s genre-bending production, giving us the first great Stargate series in years after the conclusion of SG-1. It even fits there, since a lot of Stargate‘s themes involve science and technology so advanced that they might as well be magic, so we might even have “mages” in this new series explained in science fiction terminology. I could be wrong though, but it’s a hope.

What do you all think? Are you eager to find out more about this upcoming new Stargate TV series on Amazon? Does Jac Schaeffer as the showrunner to this new TV series fill you with hope about this upcoming series? What are your thoughts about the idea of a Stargate TV series that’s more like Disney+’s WandaVision and Agatha All Along? Tell us your Stargate Command thoughts in the comments section below.
