The Mandalorian and Grogu is out now in theaters but it looks like that wasn’t always the plan for this movie from Lucasfilm. The villain of the film, Commander Coin, played by Jonny Coyne (funny how that works) is talking about his role in the film and the original plan for this story. Jon Favreau wrote the entirety of the original season four plan for The Mandalorian, but the SAG-AFTRA and Writer’s strikes caused them to change plans to a movie instead of a season of TV. Coyne sat down with GamesRadar+ to talk about the movie and his role.
“There was a time when I was booked to do a whole load of other episodes in season 4, And then that show went away, and then there was an actor strike, and there was COVID, and all sorts of things going on, and it was a difficult time. Then I heard the show got canceled, and so I just went, ‘Okay, I’ll pack my bags, and leave LA, ‘ and then I heard I was going to be part of the movie, and then I heard I was going to be seriously part of the movie, you know, significantly. And then, Jon Favreau called me up and interviewed me, and talked to me about what he plans to do with the character, and I thought, ‘Okay, bring it on.'”
Coyne went on to talk about how he never actually got the scripts for a season 4 of the show and he doesn’t know if the plan was similar or not.
“Never got the scripts for that. Literally, though, the only thing I did with Mando was three lines in the Shadow Council. They weren’t particularly significant lines, I don’t think so. But somehow it was all an intro to my character into what became the movie. So, I’m thinking maybe there was something along these lines in the series, but who knows.”
Commander Coin in the film is in hiding from the New Republic as the leader of a shadowy fighting ring that kidnaps Rotta the Hutt. That’s the kickoff for The Mandalorian and Grogu that brings Din and Grogu in contact with the Hutts in the story.
The Mandalorian And Grogu Is In Theaters Now

The Mandalorian and Grogu is in theaters right now. Here’s what we had to say about the film in our review.
The action is fast, frenetic, and fluid for a good portion of the film. There are also the creatures of the film. While Rotta the Hutt looks a bit rough at times (Hutts are really difficult to make look good, go watch the Special Edition of A New Hope), the other creatures in the film look fantastic. Grogu is adorable as always, but even in motion, they’re astounding from a technical standpoint that it’s an animatronic puppet instead of something CG.
All in all, this is still a good return to movie theaters for Star Wars. There are some issues, but there’s also a lot to like. All the things that make Star Wars special are here: whimsy, adventure, weird monsters, action, heart, and rolling Hutts.
