[Warning: article contains spoilers of Maul: Shadow Lord.] With Star Wars Day (May 4th) now behind us, let’s talk about that phenomenal Maul: Shadow Lord finale, shall we? The series as a whole provided even more nuance and depth to the character (thank you Sam Witwer!), but the finale was a chef’s kiss. In addition to a duel we’d been hoping to see since Star Wars first introduced us to Maul, the finale may have also just dispelled a long,-circulating rumor. If you’re a fan of The Mandalorian, you may (or may not) want to read this.
Throughout the streaming run of the series, the Armorer has been one of The Mandalorian’s most intriguing and enigmatic characters. We still know nothing of her background, leading to all kinds of speculation. One of the prevailing trails of thought is that she is actually Rook Cast, a Maul loyalist from the days of the Clone Wars. In a way it makes sense, especially if you consider the horns of the Armorer’s helmet being an homage to her former leader… But….

Maul: Shadow Lord dispels long-held Star Wars rumor
Sadly, it seems we now have clarity on Rook Cast’s fate. As we saw in the finale, Maul finally encounters Darth Sidious’ new apprentice, Darth Vader. (We could, and may, spend an entire article on how perfectly Shadow Lord depicts Vader’s sheer menace and brutality….) Unknowing that the Dark Lord of the Sitth lurked nearby, Rook Cast ventured forward to scout ahead. She returned terrified to inform the group that something prowled in the mist, only to be Force-pulled back into the darkness. Her screams were the last sounds she made.

I suppose it’s possible Vader didn’t actually kill her. Maybe we’ll have a “somehow, Rook Cast returned” moment. Is likely? Put it this way – Vader was hunting Maul, the Emperor’s previous apprentice. His own predecessor. (Dooku doesn’t count.) Vader had something to prove in this endeavor, and there wasn’t anything that was going to stand in his way. There would be no mercy for Maul’s faithful. The only conclusion we can draw is that the Armorer’s identity still remains a mystery. Rook Cast, she is not.
