A Huge X-Files Debut Is About To Land On Disney+

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson stand together in disbelief on a cold night in The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

Sometimes disappointing entries in any landmark franchise ring louder than even the most successful competition. The X-Files‘ developing reboot reminds us that it too has its share of chapters that fit the bill – most notably the 2008 theatrical misfire The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Almost two decades later, series creator Chris Carter’s true vision for this cinematic return will finally be available to the public – and a lot sooner than you’d think.

The X-Files’ Movie Sequel Is Getting A Brand New Director’s Cut

The truth is out there, and by that I mean in the Disney+ press release for June 2026’s additions. In a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment, scrolling through the list of incoming titles reveals that The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Director’s Cut is set to drop on June 11th. In case you missed it, Chris Carter and series stalwart Frank Spotnitz’s co-written story is a monster-of-the-week standalone that reunites Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) in the name of rescuing a kidnapped FBI agent.

Or, if you need something a bit more extreme to jog your memory, this is the one where rapper Xzibit plays an FBI agent. While the release date of The X-Files’ second night out at the movies came as a surprise, the existence of this file has been known for some time. What’s more, the series’ mastermind is already on record with what fans should expect in the new version of I Want to Believe.

The Story Behind The X-Files: I Want To Believe Director’s Cut Is Wild

Chris Carter’s June 2025 appearance on Fail Better with David Duchovny is a goldmine for details on why this director’s cut happened, and what was cut. In that interview, the Millennium creator detailed the process that led The X-Files: I Want to Believe’s more compromised theatrical version:

I made it too scary, basically, and I was told so by the brass at Fox, and they wanted a PG-13 movie. So we cut it back to be a PG-13 movie, and we thought, ‘Okay, we’ve satisfied their demands.’ [The MPA] said ‘No, it’s not a PG-13 yet, you’ve got to cut it back even farther.’

Squarely occupying the non-conspiratorial corner of The X-Files mythos, I Want to Believe was intended to be the multiplex’s equivalent of episodes like “Home” or “Syzygy.” And as you’ll read in Chris Carter’s excited pitch for what’s to come, the results could be terrifying for all the right reasons:

Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended to make. … It’s really kind of bringing to life something that for me was on the page and never got to the screen.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Director’s Cut will come our way on June 11th, only on Disney+. Just make sure to look under the “Bonus Features” section of the picture’s listing; and enjoy!
