Witch Hat Atelier gives Coco and her fellow apprentice witches a rainy day purely for the drama in Ep. 6 “A Light on a Rainy Day”. Oh, it’s not all doom and gloom. There’s still a large amount of slice of life exploring the world of magic in some tasty ways. However, this episode is also when we get a deeper look into the darker side of that same world of magic. All to the beat of heavy rain on the roofs and windows in the background.

Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 6 “A Light on a Rainy Day”: Details in Brief

We even get to meet another member of the main cast in this episode.

Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 6 “A Light on a Rainy Day” is the sixth episode (you can read my reviews for Ep. 1-2Ep. 3Ep. 4, and Ep. 5 here) of this dark fantasy anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Kamome Shirahama.

Bug Films (Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead) is the animation studio behind this anime. Ayumu Watanabe is the director of this anime, with Jun Shinohara as the assistant director, Hiroshi Seko as the writer, and Yuka Kitamura as the composer for the music.

The opening theme song for Witch Hat Atelier is “Kaze no Ansemu” by Eve ft. suis from Yorushika. Meanwhile, “Tada Utsukushii Noroi” by Nakamura Hak is the ending theme song.

Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 6 “A Light on a Rainy Day”:

The vast majority of Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 6 “A Light on a Rainy Day” is some flavor of slice of life. However, the various different tastes of those flavors is why this episode feels so good to watch.

First off, we have the cute and calm magical practice in the first half of the episode. It quickly turns the episode into a cooking show when Qifrey (voiced by Natsuki Hanae (JP) and Joshua Waters (EN)) teaches Coco (voiced by Rena Motomura (JP) and Anjali Kunapaneni (EN)) how to better do magic via using magic for cooking. The entire sequence is very well-animated, with emphasis on close-ups of the work to show off the level of detail that Bug Films’ animators love pouring into this anime. This includes making the fantasy food look as delicious as possible, complete with that browned, bubbly texture of melted cheese that we all know and love.

However, the latter half of this episode is where all the meat and bones are in terms of drama. Here, the story introduces us to the last member of the main cast of Kamome Shirahama’s manga: Olruggio (voiced by Yuichi Nakamura (JP) and Reagan Murdock (EN)). His official job is to be essentially Qifrey’s one-man oversight committee, reporting back to the witches’ government to make sure Qifrey isn’t doing anything illegal. In reality though, Olruggio’s role is far more nuanced and complex.

He effectively acts as a second teacher to the kids, and given his very close relationship with Qifrey, he comes across almost as Dad Number Two. Even this early in the story, there are hints of something going on between him and Qifrey that feels very much like romance. As a longtime fan of the manga, I can tell you that those feelings only get stronger and stronger as the story progresses.

And then of course, there’s the ongoing drama going on with Agott (voiced by Hibiku Yamamura (JP) and Madeleine Morris (EN)). This episode really shows off how her work ethic stems from a desire to prove herself to be competent. Why she has that strong desire to be seen as competent is something they only tease at in this episode though. We’ll have to wait for the next episode of Witch Hat Atelier to see more of her backstory, especially since she’s so insistent on helping out with the emergency that pops up at the end of this episode.

Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 6 “A Light on a Rainy Day”: The Bad

Fortunately, hot cheesy sandwiches are the perfect thing for rainy days.

Alas, Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 6 “A Light on a Rainy Day” does end on a cliffhanger. You can see why they did so. Otherwise, this episode would be a lot longer than it currently is, and it does seem like a good place to stop for this week. However, the fact remains that you will be vibrating in place to find out what happens next when the next episode will presumably drop on May 11, 2026.

There’s also the fact that this episode is devoid of action. It’s basically a slice of life cooking session mixed with some dark fantasy thriller for this episode. If you want action, you will have to wait for the next episode.
