Witch Hat Atelier takes Coco’s calm and peaceful slice of life fantasy life, and then tosses her into the fire in Ep. 4 “Meetings in Kalhn”. Oh, and with her new apprentice friends from the atelier all being thrown in with her when they follow her. That friendship looks like it’s going to see quite a bit of testing here with everyone being in a life-or-death situation.
Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 4 “Meetings in Kalhn”: Details in Brief

Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 4 “Meetings in Kalhn” is the fourth episode (you can read the review for Ep. 1-2, and Ep. 3 here) of this dark fantasy anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Kamome Shirahama.
Bug Films (Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead) is the animation studio behind this anime. Ayumu Watanabe is the director of this anime, with Jun Shinohara as the assistant director, Hiroshi Seko as the writer, and Yuka Kitamura as the composer for the music.
The opening theme song for Witch Hat Atelier is “Kaze no Ansemu” by Eve ft. suis from Yorushika. Meanwhile, “Tada Utsukushii Noroi” by Nakamura Hak is the ending theme song.
Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 4 “Meetings in Kalhn”: The Good
The greatness of Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 4 “Meetings in Kalhn” can be split into two parts. The first part is the slice of life fantasy in which Coco (voiced by Rena Motomura (JP) and Anjali Kunapaneni (EN)) discovers the world of magic alongside her fellow students in the atelier, and all under the watchful eyes of their teacher Qifrey (voiced by Natsuki Hanae (JP) and Joshua Waters (EN)). This kind of story structure will seem quite familiar to fans of similar kinds of fantasy anime like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Little Witch Academia. The slice of life is used to explore the lore and setting in a fantastic case of “showing without telling”.
With the efforts of Bug Films’ animation team being vital to this, and them succeeding beyond our wildest dreams. Heck, when you’re watching a drop of water hitting the surface of a filled fountain, sending up a little droplet along with the ripples, which then falls back down into the fountain, all animated down to the smallest details in water movement, you know that the animation budget for this anime must be through the roof, let alone this one episode.
As for the other part? That would be when Coco and her fellow students end up being trapped in some kind of strange, abandoned town after pursuing a brim-hatted witch. The whole ordeal starts off being eerie, and gets deadly serious when their lives are put into real danger. And by a dragon of all things: fitting for a fantasy anime. The dragon is animated in truly gorgeous detail, with close-ups of its pupil contracting and its tongue flicking out in a naturally fluid way that brings the creature to life.
It’s the group’s reactions to the dragon that really bring the story to life though. Their mutual panic and fear are wonderfully animated and voiced, and the drama surrounding Coco being the outsider of their group is illustrated in heart-wrenching detail. This episode really hammers it home that a major theme of this episode is the acceptance of an outsider into an insular culture, and the struggles of that outsider to fit in when they know little to nothing about the institutional knowledge that only members of the in-group would know.. It only makes you long for the next episode of Witch Hat Atelier just to see how they fix this situation.
Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 4 “Meetings in Kalhn”: The Bad

Alas, Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 4 “Meetings in Kalhn” does end on a cliffhanger. It’s a pretty major one too, stopping the episode right when some major drama is happening. You can understand why they did it because the episode would be twice the length of a normal episode otherwise. It still doesn’t stop me from gnashing my teeth, waiting for the next episode to air already.
