You can already guess what Lanterns is all about if you’re a fan of DC comics. Green Lantern has always been a popular group of superheroes since they’re essentially space cops with the power of create anything on their side. It’s a weirdly contrasting clash of tropes here, since law enforcement is basically the opposite of imagination (as well as freedom symbolically) thematically. And yet, it seems to work for Green Lantern, which makes this live-action TV series adaptation featuring the writings of Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King (with Mundy as showrunner) a potentially very interesting show. Especially since they just gave us our first official look at this upcoming series.
HBO Max is proud to give us the first official trailer for their upcoming DC superhero series Lanterns at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 (SDCC 2026). All during a panel held at SDCC 2026 in which starring cast Kyle Chandler (playing Hal Jordan), Aaron Pierre (playing John Stewart), Garret Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan and co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King discuss this upcoming series highlighted by that new trailer. On top of all of this, that new trailer also reveals that we’ll get to see this upcoming superhero drama will debut its eight-episode first season on Sunday, August 16, 2026 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. And of course, it will stream exclusively on HBO Max.

Lanterns Looks to Be More Grounded and Gritty Green Lantern Series
It’s not hard to see it. From the muted color scheme to the emphasis on realistic and brutal violence, that official trailer for Lanterns makes it feel very grounded and gritty. Like a sort of neo-noir / neo-Western interpretation of Green Lantern’s story beats. It certainly looks like it could be a very interesting story if done right. Like an alien invasion story with more grounded and human reactions to it.
And yet, that story is also what worries me. I feel a bit odd for thinking this, but doesn’t it feel weird for Lanterns to focus on an alien invasion story about hostile aliens that can look like anyone while the U.S. is going through its own immigration woes (especially about immigration enforcement) right now? It makes this story feel like it’s trying to make some kind of political statement here about aliens being threats to society and so on. Honestly, I hope I’m just seeing things here, because it would definitely spark a major backlash if that’s the story they want to go with, as well as detract from the story period.
