Comic book movies tend to be a subject of intense secrecy. That is, unless you’re DC Films co-CEO/creative mastermind James Gunn, an expert when it comes to the line of what can and cannot be shared. With Supergirl’s promotional blitz moving us closer to its late June debut, Gunn is turning out eyes to the future with a big Lex Luthor reveal from his Superman sequel – Man of Tomorrow.
On the surface, this seems like merely another generous offering to comic fan. But since I like to try and call the shots ahead, my mind has been piecing together what this criminal genius’ latest life event could mean. And friends, it doesn’t look good. In fact…one could say that it’s a portent of Doom. (Not that guy, wrong publisher.)
Nicholas Hoult’s First Look In Lex Luthor’s Warsuit Is Super Threatening
Let’s start off with a baseline of fact, which comes courtesy of James Gunn’s Twitter. While the next round with our big blue Boy Scout won’t be hitting theaters until July 2027, that just means there’s plenty of time to keep people talking through cryptic images. Case in point is this photographic gem, straight out of Metropolis:
Ok, so there’s a chance that we might not be seeing Lex Luthor in the city he loves to call his. To be fair, there are plenty of DC Universe locations throughout the galaxy that could have sand and vague darkness like we’ve seen here. That’s not the point at this moment. What I’m winding up to is that while Nicholas Hoult’s supervillain may look somewhat out of his element here, Man of Tomorrow might be leading up to something that might ripple throughout the DCU.

I Highly Doubt Lex Luthor’s Going Back To Prison After Man Of Tomorrow
When we last saw Lex Luthor in the wild, it was during his appearance on HBO Max’s Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 6 – “Ignorance is Chris.” Getting chummy with previous opponent turned reluctant ally Rick Flagg Sr. (Frank Grillo), the megalomanic made a deal to serve out his 265 year sentence in a non-metahuman prison.
While we haven’t gotten confirmation just yet, it feels safe to assume that Mr. Luthor is in a normal human prison again. That’s a key move for Man of Tomorrow’s Brainiac-centric story, as Lex’s Warsuit could very well be another custom job built out of an ask from A.R.G.U.S. With a suit like that, the walls of a typical establishment of incarceration are practically tissue paper; so that centuries long sentence may be unexpectedly cut.
The Warsuit is also a potential deterrent against Superman (David Corenswet), as it amps up his strength and defense against Metahuman strength. So to recap: a mad genius billionaire has made deals to use his gadgets to benefit the government; to the point where they’re so desperate they’ll let him build his own supersuit. Yeah, Lex isn’t going back to jail; and furthermore, I think he’ll make sure of that through his own ultimate gambit.

Supergirl’s Existence Might Inspire Lex Luthor’s Most Fiendish Plot Yet
Here’s a question for the DC Comics class: if you’re a villain in a world of organized heroes, what’s your best counter move? If you answered “Build Your Own Legion Of Doom,” you too remember your Superfriends. While there have been other equivalents in the DC Comics canon, this may not be the exact name this hypothetical body adopts.
But as the world of the DCU expands beyond our dimension, with more metahumans and their foes appearing, organization will be key. The heroes of Superman already have the Justice Society of America, so why shouldn’t those banished to the shadows have their own social club? Escalation is always key in a good story, and DCU Chapter 2 might be the perfect crisis that requires a heroic upgrade we’re all familiar with. How else would you form a Justice League?
Admittedly, this is a huge scenario to pull from one photo of Nicholas Hoult in Lex Luthor’s Warsuit. There’s plenty of time for more clues to fall into place between now and Man of Tomorrow’s theatrical arrival on July 9, 2027. Which naturally leads into Supergirl, which will unfold in front of all of our eyes on June 26th.
