As a huge fan of the Hulu Series, Normal People when I learned about Conversations with Friends I was already in. The new series for Hulu is based on a book by Sally Rooney (who also wrote Normal People), which follows two best friends, Frances and Bobbi.
Frances is a 21-year-old college student who is best friends with her ex-girlfriend, Bobbi. The two couldn’t be more different Frances is quiet, awkward, but sharp. Bobbi is outspoken, confident, and not afraid to speak her mind. The two meet and become friends with a married couple, Nick and Melissa Conway, which takes the two into a messy world they weren’t quite ready for.
CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS
When I tell you every episode of this series stressed me out, I mean it! I don’t typically get behind cheating material, but for some reason I found this series to be incredibly compelling. This is mostly because of this stellar cast navigating these incredibly messy scenarios.
Newcomer Alison Oliver plays Frances with charm and a quaintness that you rarely see. It makes her scenes with Joe Alwyn (Nick Conway) even more delightful and peculiar. This is the first thing I’ve seen Alwyn in, and I can’t wait to see more. The two have fantastic chemistry and he makes someone making bad choices likable.
Sasha Lane (Eutopia) as Bobbie has a quiet fierceness that makes you pay attention to her every time she’s on the screen. I have been a fan of Jemima Kirke’s (Melissa Conway) ever since she played Jessa on Girls. She is always a phenomenal actress in everything I see her do leading with her heart on her sleeve.
PERFECT FOR BINGING
Every episode of Conversations with Friends is roughly 35 mins. Which for me is perfect for a show like this. As I said, every episode is filled with so much tension I don’t think I could handle it if they were longer. It also makes the episodes easy to binge.
Did I enjoy this series as much as Normal People? I’d say no, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth your time. I quite enjoyed this messy world that’s been created, even though I wasn’t sure I was going to. So, if you’re looking for a new series of wild, messy relationships. Look no further! You’ve found it.
