ESPN Announces New Doc
The WNBA link up with ESPN for a new Original series. Setting The Tempo Chronicles the beginnings of Canada’s team. The series is executive produced by Serena Williams, Robin Roberts, Ryan Reynolds and more. They’re going to dive deep into the creation of the Toronto tempo and how you start a legacy from the ground floor.
ESPN has not announced a premiere date for Setting the Tempo.
The Toronto Tempo Gets Headliner Treatment
Canada’s first WNBA team enjoys top-billing in the new ESPN series. Setting The Tempo is all about the Toronto-based club’s creation. It’s hard work rolling out an entire visual identity for a franchise. And, though this new series, you’re going to get to see just how much work goes into that from all angles.
As we see from other successful WNBA franchises, what starts at this early planning stage, blossoms into an entire movement. For both communities, and the cities they’re located in, teams are part of daily life. For the Tempo, they walk hand in hand into basketballs legacy in Toronto alongside the Raptors. Masai Ujiri is actually a principal owner of the Tempo after helping guide T-Dot’s other basketball club into the NBA Finals in 2019.

Joining The WNBA Community
ESPN Originals Vice President Lindsay Rovegno is excited for fans to see the work. The producer said, “With the incredible growth of the WNBA and women’s basketball, this is the perfect time to showcase the launch of Canada’s first WNBA franchise.”
“Setting the Tempo presents a rare opportunity for fans to see what it truly takes to build a successful organization, shining a spotlight on the female executives whose decisions and vision are laying the foundation for the future,” she added.
Robin Roberts also had some thoughts about this moment for Women’s Basketball. The beloved anchor began, “As someone who has loved women’s basketball and had the privilege of being part of the WNBA’s story since the very beginning, this project feels incredibly special.”
“The launch of the Toronto Tempo represents a defining moment for the league and for women’s sports in Canada,” Roberts continued. “This series captures the passion, pressure and purpose behind building a franchise from the ground up, while shining a light on the women leading the way and shaping the future of the game.”
The Franchise’s President Offers A Statement
“Bringing a WNBA team to life has been an unforgettable journey,” Teresa Resch, President of the Toronto Tempo explained. “Thanks to the incredibly talented storytellers at Rock’n Robin Productions, Ujiri Productions, Maximum Effort, and Nine Two Six Productions, fans will get an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at everything that went into building this team, and the moments that led to our first tip-off.”
