On June 7, the cast of Jackass participated in the WeHo Pride Parade along Santa Monica Boulevard. Said the official social media posts across platforms: “Banned from West Hollywood no more. We were all over the rainbow to participate in the WeHo Pride Parade today. Wahoo!”
The ban refers to the fallout in 1999 when the crew was filming the pilot stunt, “The Convict.” The stunt featured Knoxville posing as an escaped convict seeking assistance with removing his handcuffs, and it caused such chaos among the West Hollywood Police Station that they were subsequently banned from filming there.
The crew stopped at Beaches Tropicana in the Rainbow District to thank the community for having them. Knoxville especially was particularly effusive for the opportunity, later posting on Instagram: “Dream come true today as we had a float in the Weho Pride Parade!🏳️🌈 Thank you and love to the LGBTQ+ community for supporting us all these years and we totally support you. Thanks to @wehopride for letting us participate and @beachestropicanaweho for letting us speak at your bar. What a beautiful event to be a part of, I was overcome with emotion a few times along the parade route. So happy and grateful. 🌈❤️🌈”
‘Jackass’ actually is queer-coded
Though reactions to the cast appearing at a Pride event were mixed, the responses were still overwhelmingly positive under Knoxville’s post. However, Jackass has always been a show that supports and advocates queer culture and homoeroticism. In fact, back in 2010 Knoxville and co-star Steve-O both addressed this in an interview with Vanity Fair.
“We always thought it was funny to force a heterosexual MTV generation to deal with all of our thongs and homoerotic humor. In many ways, all our gay humor has been a humanitarian attack against homophobia. We’ve been trying to rid the world of homophobia for years, and I think gay people really dig it too,” said Steve-O.
Knoxville likewise said that he was “offended” that the interviewer only called Jackass a “smidge gay.”
