Chad Powers season 2 has dropped all 6 episodes on Hulu and the Glen Powell series has left fans with a lot to unpack. Much like the end of season 1, Michael Waldron and Powell cooked up something special to keep fans on the edge of their seats as we wait for news on a potential season 3.
Season 2 takes place shortly after the events of season 1 with Chad/Russ (Powell) working with Coach Ricky Hudson (Perry Mattfeld) to try and keep his secret. It is no longer just Russ and Danny (Frankie A. Rodriguez) keeping the game alive. And the majority of the season had Ricky stressed out dealing with the situations that Russ has found Chad in. But even as they fight and bicker and Russ unpacks his own feelings for Ricky, the season leads to an explosive final episode.
**Spoilers for Chad Powers season 2 lie ahead**
The tension between Russ and Ricky built throughout all of season 2, leading to a tense meeting at the final game of the show’s season. And against Powell’s favorite team, the Texas Longhorns. As Russ learns that Ricky is planning on leaving the Catfish to go coach in Syracuse, the two are being hunted down by Gerry (Colton Ryan), the angry former starting quarterback of the South Georgia Catfish.
Gerry has already attacked Danny, threatened Russ, and has been ready to expose who Chad Powers really is for most of the season. Gerry thinks he’s managed to make everyone hate “Chad” by forcing Russ to blow their chance at the championship in the game against UT. Instead, Ricky and Russ work together to allow them to still win the game, even with all of Gerry’s requirements to win his “bet” he placed on the Catfish.
Chad vs. Gerry
The Gerry vs. Chad feud started back in season 1. When Gerry lost his position, he didn’t fully mind at the start but he slowly began to resent Chad and then thought something wasn’t right about the situation. It took Gerry sabotaging Danny’s role as the Catfish to really get the confirmation he needed and it allowed Gerry to go full serial killer to take down Russ. But because of this, it took the pressure off of Russ and everyone around him.
In the final moments of the season, as Russ/Chad and Ricky hug, Gerry is about to confront them after losing his battle against Chad. Tricia’s (Wynn Everett) security tackles Gerry before he can reach them and it is made clear to Russ and Ricky that Tricia knew about Chad’s real identity, leaving the future of the team in her hands. And gave them less pressure to keep the Russ of it all a secret.
The future of Chad Powers
Chad Powers season 2 ends with two big moments: Tricia and Danny joining forces to make sure that Russ stays as part of the Catfish as “Chad Powers” for a very long time and Russ and Ricky finally caving to their feelings. The issue there is that Coach Jake Hudson (Steve Zahn) walks in and catches them after repeatedly telling Ricky to stay away from Chad for two whole seasons.
What does all this mean for season 3 if we get it? It means that the pressure Ricky was under to leave given the situation with Russ. But now that Tricia knows, that just means she’s going to use Russ to her advantage and that’s definitely going to give us a lot to deal with if we get another season.
