The grandaddy of them all is arriving summer of 2029.
Dragons Coming to the Seven Kingdoms and a Theater Near You
We’re talking about Aegon Targaryen, First of His Name and the upcoming “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.” This will be the first film in the “Game of Thrones” universe; a prequel finally showing audiences the Targaryen takeover of Westeros. It’s currently scheduled for June 6, 2029, showing that HBO/Warner Bros. have strong faith this movie will do well.
Owen Harris, executive producer of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” (he also directed a few episodes of the first season), is set to direct the highly anticipated project, with a screenplay by Beau Willimon (“Andor,” “House of Cards”). Harris’ also counts “Black Mirror” and “Brave New World” among his directing accolades.
The Beginning of Westeros as We Know It
Of course, we don’t know what the the movie itself will be about officially, but we can make some pretty good guesses, considering there’s plenty of source material regarding the event called “Aegon’s Conquest.” It’s the story of Aegon I, the many-great-grandfather of Rhaenyra, Daenerys and others, and his takeover of Westeros with his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys (yes, the “House of the Dragon” character played by Eve Best is named after her).
Forever known as Aegon the Conqueror, the character’s story is the exact kind of tale GoT fans love the universe for. This film will amplify the franchise’s usual mythos bringing battles, incestuous relationships, politicking, and, most importantly, dragons to the big screen.
This will mark the first time we see Aegon I and his sisters in live action, which is thrilling, as the Targaryens are the most unique-looking characters in the entire universe, with the better storylines. Their mere appearance speaks to a deeper magic, something that feels more ungrounded than a direwolf or a lion. Fans will also get a chance to see Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes, the legendary dragons that birthed our favorite fire-breathing lizards across multiple shows.
“Aegon’s Conquest” will come on the heels of “House of the Dragon’s” fourth season and a second season for “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”
