Universal Pictures is heading back to 1985 with Miami Vice ’85 from director Joseph Kosinski. Now, it looks like John Leguizamo is joining Austin Butler, Michael B. Jordan, and Alden Ehrenreich in the upcoming film. Deadline is reporting that Leguizamo has signed on as the villain of the film. Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, and Danny Ramirez are also on board to star in the film. Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick is joined by screenwriter Dan Gilroy. The new movie explores the glamor and corruption of 1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of that landmark series.
Miami Vice ’85 will be filmed for IMAX theaters and is set for release on May 19th, 2028. Production on the film should begin later this year.
As for Leguizamo’s role in the film, if they’re following the pilot episode of the series, he could be playing Esteban Calderone. He was played in the series by Miguel Piñero. Calderone is the leader of the Calderone drug cartel operating across the Bahamas, Miami, and New York. In the show, his men murdered Ricardo Tubbs’ (played by Phillip Michael Thomas in the show, Michael B. Jordan in the film) brother, which sets the course for the TV show.
The film is produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski, with the script based on characters by Anthony Yerkovich from the original series which he executive produced with Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier version of the screenplay.
What Else Has John Leguizamo Been Up To?
John Leguizamo has been on a run with Universal Pictures lately. He starred in The Odyssey by Christopher Nolan and nearly stole the show with his role. He’s also starring in the untitled event film from The Daniels that is currently filming. He’ll be starring with Matt Damon in that film. The next film for him is also at Universal with The Exorcist from Mike Flanagan. He’s joined by Scarlett Johansson, Laurence Fishburne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Sasha Calle.
As for Miami Vice ’85, the film is pretty high up on my hype list. As a massive fan of the original TV series and the Michael Mann movie, this is a dream come true to have a director like Joseph Kosinski directing the film. Add to that, that the cast is about as top notch as it gets. John Leguizamo joining it only makes the movie that much better.
We’ll have to see when the film comes out in 2028.
