‘Subnautica 2’ Finally Drops Early Access Release Date With New Cinematic Trailer

Subnautica 2 has had quite a most interesting development cycle for any video game. All of it due to publisher Krafton’s sabotaging of the game’s development, beginning that sordid saga when they illegally fired the co-founders of developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment in a bid to take over the company, and most notably, in order to prevent a $250 million payout to the developer for meeting profit milestones for Krafton. The recent legal victory in Unknown Worlds’ favor has laid out Krafton’s sins for all to see, but has also let the community breathe a sigh of relief that the game’s development and subsequence Early Access release can finally continue. Krafton attempted to sabotage that as well by announcing the release window early without Unknown Worlds’ approval, which only raised fears about that Early Access anew. Fortunately, it looks like those fears can be put to rest now.

Unknown Worlds Entertainment is proud to release a brand new cinematic trailer for Subnautica 2. Said trailer at the end reveals the exact release date for Early Access at long last to be May 14, 2026. You can watch that trailer on YouTube, or just look below:

Honestly, this announcement has been delayed for far, far too long. Subnautica 2 should’ve gone into Early Access back in July 2025 had it not been for Krafton’s sabotage, according to the recent court ruling. Well, it’s nine months late by the time of this writing, but better late than never, and from the looks of it, it’s well worth the wait.

First off: the cinematic trailer is very eager to show off the co-op experience in Subnautica 2. It’s all too plausible to imagine someone too focused on drilling a resource node, and then turning around to find all of their friends gone, having been snatched away by predatory aquatic lifeforms. The rumors about Unknown Worlds wanting to add a proximity chat to the game would make the experience all the more excitingly horrific. Imagine hearing the screams of a friend getting farther and farther as they’re dragged away into the depths? It’d add so much to the horrors of this new alien ocean: perfect for a game that strikes fear into everyone with thalassophobia. Here’s hoping that the game only gets more thalassophobic when we can finally play it.

What do you all think? Are you eager to finally play Subnautica 2 when it dives into Early Access on May 14? Tell us your thalassophobic thoughts in the comments section below.
