LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight

Score: 8.5

Somehow we got an excellent Batman game AND an excellent LEGO game all in one in 2026. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is for fans of the caped crusader, fans of LEGO, and people who love themselves an open world game. TT Games has somehow crafted a game that checks all of those boxes while also being hilarious as a parody of the history of Batman. This isn’t their first foray into Batman, but it is their best. The fun continues with an open world that connects the whole game through the various locales and landscapes that Batman has faced in his long career.

The LEGO aspect of the game is also a whole different beast. It feels the most like a LEGO game while also keeping what makes Batman so special as a character. If you know and love all the history of the character, you’ll get a kick out of the mashups of various scenes and characters . The game is at its best when it takes those known scenes and jumbles them up, adding in the trademarked LEGO humor to the proceedings. The fun isn’t limited to just the movies though, there are plenty of characters from the comic books and animated shows as well like Condiment King, Killer Croc, and more.

The 20 or so linear missions play out like comic book stories, and while they don’t necessarily mesh together, they make for a funny blend. The combat also surprised the hell out of me. There are deeper aspects to it than your normal LEGO game and getting combos up into the hundreds is always fun.

Some Small Quibbles

Flying through Gotham City but LEGO style.

There are plenty of characters to play as in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, but all of them feel the same. Combat between Batmen and other characters doesn’t feel different. Jim Gordon smacks around bad guys the same as Batman. It would have been nice for them to feel functionally different between the characters with movesets. They do have different gadgets that they use, so that’s something. They also have their own skill trees which makes for playing with them at least different enough. Those skills don’t show up in combat, but they do show up in puzzles. Knowing when to switch around between characters makes for some interesting gameplay.

Those combat encounters don’t really change as the game goes on, you feel the same fighting bad guys at the beginning that you will at the end. That’s what drags the game down for me a bit. The game doesn’t drag along though. You can complete the main story without grabbing everything the game has to offer in like 10-12 hours. That’s a pretty good run for a game like this and it doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Where LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight really shines though is the charm. Its a charming as hell game that should bring a smile to anyone’s face. The LEGO secret sauce of silly humor and addictive gameplay is on full display here.

The best thing about LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is just the whimsy and charm on display though. You can tell the developers had a ball making the game and it comes out with the gameplay. The vehicles feel big and weighty, the characters and situations are humorous, and the open-world Gotham City is amazing to just hang out in. There are hundreds of collectibles and tiny details to find for Batman fans. That’s really the special thing with this game. You can play it how you want to. Speed through the main story and just get those done. That’s fine. Or you can take the time to look at all of the details of Gotham City and unlock all the game’s collectibles.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is among the best Batman games out there and a must-play for fans of the caped crusader.
