Daemons of the Shadow Realm finally gives twins Yuru and Asa a proper reunion in Ep. 5 “Hare and Tortoise”. You know, after the very much hostile first reunion? It’s effectively a reset in their relationship…or at least, an attempt at a reset. All while mysterious forces are now moving around them, and very clearly targeting them.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 5 “Hare and Tortoise”: Details in Brief

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 5 “Hare and Tortoise” is the fifth episode (you can read my reviews for Ep. 1, Ep. 2, Ep. 3, and Ep. 4 here) of this dark fantasy action adventure anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist, Silver Spoon, The Heroic Legend of Arslan).
Bones Film (Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Ouran High School Host Club, My Hero Academia) is the animation studio behind this anime. Masahiro Andō is the director behind this anime, with Noboru Takagi as the writer, and Kenichiro Suehiro as the composer for the music.
Speaking of that music, the opening theme song for Daemons of the Shadow Realm is “Time to Fly” by Vaundy. Meanwhile, “Let’s Fly” by yama is the ending theme song.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 5 “Hare and Tortoise”: The Good
The majority of why Ep. 5 “Hare and Tortoise” is great is because of the slice of life. This is some pretty unique slice of life as well due to all the tension between the two main characters: Yuru (voiced by Kensho Ono (JP) and Ben Stegmair (EN)) and Asa (voiced by Yume Miyamoto (JP) and Molly Zhang (EN)). In fact, this is the episode where the twin siblings finally get a heart to heart. Alas, the first meeting was far too hostile for them to have any sort of meaningful interactions with each other. Thus, this meeting is basically their first actual conversation with each other under peaceable terms.
And it’s quite revealing in terms of story, but it’s also revealing in terms of how the siblings view each other. Yuru, for understandable reasons if you recall the first few episodes, views his sister with suspicion and distrust, bordering on outright hostility. Meanwhile, Asa just absolutely adores her brother nearly to the point of idolization, even asking repeatedly to be able to hug him. The sheer disparity in their views of each other is somehow used as a source of tension and a source of comedy simultaneously. The two sides of the story tug at each other and complement each other in a way that’s quite engaging, proving once more that Hiromu Arakawa still has the storytelling power.
And Now for the Action!
While the slice of life comedy-drama does make up a large portion of this episode, we also get just a smidgen of supernatural action right at the very end. It’s quite well-done action as well, with Bones Film emphasizing the frantic, rushed nature of the action with very sudden movements and scene cuts. That combined with the characters constantly running away from their enemies creates a distinct impression that the whole scene is something right out of a thriller movie. Eventually though, they do turn around and fight. What happens next is now up to the next episode of Daemons of the Shadow Realm to decide.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 5 “Hare and Tortoise”: The Bad

Alas, that same action that makes the end of Ep. 5 “Hare and Tortoise” so refreshingly exciting also ends at a major cliffhanger. The episode literally ends in the middle of Yuru firing off an arrow, where we have to wait for the next episode just to see what happens to that arrow. I feel like they could’ve cut off the episode a bit better there just to minimize the cliffhanger sensation. Alas, they went for maximum nail-biting tension instead, so that’s what we got until the next episode.
Anime Recommendations
Fortunately, if you can’t wait that long, there are many alternatives. You can watch more bloody action with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Kaiju No. 8, DDDD, DAN DA DAN, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II, Zenshu, Blue Box, Solo Leveling, Black Butler, Nyaight of the Living Cat, May I Ask for One Final Thing?, and/or TRIGUN STARGAZE. On the other hand, if you want some calmer anime to cool off after that cliffhanger, then you might want to watch Spy x Family, Senpai is an Otokonoko, Apocalypse Hotel, Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, The Ancient Magus’ Bride, My Dress-Up Darling, This Monster Wants to Eat Me, Hana-Kimi, Journal with Witch, and/or Witch Hat Atelier.
