Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang return very soon in Toy Story 5, a new installment in the popular Pixar franchise. The last time we linked up with this familiar bunch was in 2019’s Toy Story 4, which garnered solid reviews upon its release and went on to become the highest-grossing film of the franchise with a global take of $1.074 billion. Even though things seemed perfectly wrapped up with 2010’s Toy Story 3, the fourth film ended up justifying its existence by bringing not only the franchise’s signature humor, but also its emotional depth, stellar animation, and impeccable vocal performances. The social embargo has just been lifted for Toy Story 5, and even though Pixar struck gold with Toy Story 4, will it happen again with this latest installment, or is it time to put these toys away for good?

What Is Toy Story 5 About?

Directed by Andrew Stanton and from a screenplay he co-wrote alongside Kenna Harris, Toy Story 5 finds Jessie (Joan Cusack) as the leader of Bonnie’s (Scarlett Spears) room, with Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) as her second in command, after Woody (Tom Hanks) left to stay with Bo Peep (Annie Potts) to help abandoned toys locate their owners. However, Buzz seeks out Woody’s help when a now eight-year-old Bonnie has become enamored with her new electronic frog-like tablet toy, Lilypad (Greta Lee). With Lilypad stealing all of Bonnie’s attention, the other toys band together to try to overcome the tablet’s hold over her. The film also features the vocal talent of Tony Hale, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Blake Clark, Bonnie Hunt, Keanu Reeves, Craig Robinson, Bad Bunny, Ernie Hudson, and many more.
Toy Story 5 is gunning for one of the biggest openings of the year, with tracking having next week’s debut to potentially reach between $150-170 million, which would make it the biggest opening of the franchise to date. With families, kids, and adults of all ages attached to the Toy Story IP, the opening of the fifth installment should be another win for a summer movie season that has been on fire so far.
Toy Story 5 hits screens nationwide on June 15.
