AMC have released the thrilling new trailer for season three of The Walking Dead: Dead City. The spin-off stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan as Negan and Maggie, and follows them as they build the first successful community in Manhattan since the apocalypse.
According to the official plot by AMC:
In season three, Maggie (Cohan)and Negan (Morgan) finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?
The new trailer shows Maggie starting to come to terms with the idea that humanity can be rebuilt, and that they can create a place with food, water and electricity. Frenemy Negan is too cynical to believe that the idea of creating a community could really work.
Joining the cast is Lucifer’s Aimee Garcia as Renata, a leader who has a history with Croat while Army Of The Dead actor Raul Castillo will play her brother, Louis, a doctor who acts as a mentor. Westworld’s Jimmi Simpson is also cast, playing Dillard who is struggling with the psychological cost of surviving the apocalypse alone. Lauren Cohan teased to Entertainment Weekly that Negan and Dillan have a “compelling relationship” and that his character is “a revelation.”
“Dillard’s character is like a revelation. He’s one of my favorite characters in all The Walking Dead. Period. Full stop,” she explained.
The trailer depicts the growing concern about Negan’s behavior and whether he can really be trusted. Maggie, meanwhile, is more concerned about the cost of survival and the heavy price that comes with protecting a community.
The Walking Dead: Dead City is the fourth spin-off of the successful post-apocalyptic zombie franchise. The first season of Dead City premiered in 2023, but production for the second was delayed due to the WGA strikes. Season two finally hit our screens in 2025, with AMC announcing the series would only run for four series.
Last July, AMC Networks also officially announced that showrunner Eli Jorné was stepping down from his role at The Walking Dead: Dead City. Seth Hoffman took on the role, replacing Eli as the showrunner of the third season.
Season 3 Of The Walking Dead: Dead City follows Season 2’s Polarizing Finale
This series follows the polarizing season 2 finale. It saw Maggie choose to spare Negan’s life after she found him grieving Ginny. Airing in June 2025, fans weren’t happy that Maggie finally had the chance to avenge Glen’s death, ten years later, and she chose to let him walk away.
Executive producer Scott M. Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter, that he wanted to find a new version of Maggie and Negan who could set aside their past and move forward and help civilization.
“For these two characters, if keeping Negan alive is holding on, is killing him actually letting go? I like how this goes right up to the edge of that choice, almost like it’s A Christmas Carol, where she’s all-but killed him, and has found that it’s not fulfilling the journey she’s been on for herself — the journey of who she was and who she’s becoming,” he explained about the story that has been years in the making.
“This has been a very long story,” he adds. “It’s been years and years that we’ve seen Maggie and Negan in this cycle.” Maggie has been completely and totally justified in her hate and anger and trauma, but for the audience, we’ve been watching her live with that for so long. It’s been eight years [of real time], and I want to see Maggie surmount this thing and evolve from it.”
The first episode of season three premieres on AMC and AMC+ on July 2026
