Weekend Box Office: Mandalorian and Grogu Opens With $82M

Devil wears prada

This weekend’s box office was dominated by the long awaited return of Star Wars to theaters, though the debut landed closer to the lower end of expectations than some may have anticipated. Even so, the franchise proved once again that it remains one of the few brands capable of instantly reshaping the theatrical landscape.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Takes First

The Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu debuted with $82.0 million.

Tracking suggested an opening between $81 million and $96 million, with expectations leaning toward a $92 million debut. Instead, the film landed much closer to the bottom end of projections.

That is still a very strong opening by normal standards, but for a theatrical Star Wars release tied directly to one of Disney+’s biggest shows, the result feels slightly softer than expected. Even so, the film had no trouble securing first place and immediately became one of the year’s larger openings.

Obsession Climbs in Week Two

Obsession earned $22.4 million.

The thriller actually increased its momentum heading into its second weekend, an uncommon but impressive feat in the current marketplace. Strong word of mouth appears to be helping it stand apart from the heavier franchise competition surrounding it.

Michael Continues Its Impressive Run

Michael brought in $20.0 million.

Even with a major blockbuster arriving, the film continues to hold remarkably well. At this stage in its run, most releases would have dropped far more sharply, making its consistency one of the stronger box office stories of the season.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Slows Down At The Box Office

The Devil Wears Prada 2 added $12.6 million.

The sequel continues to generate respectable numbers, though its momentum has clearly cooled following several weeks of strong performance. Even so, it remains one of the year’s more successful legacy sequels.

The Sheep Detectives Remains Steady

The Sheep Detectives collected $9.0 million.

The family comedy continues to quietly hold its position in the top five. While it has never dominated headlines, its consistency has made it one of the more reliable performers currently in theaters.

Next Weekend’s Predictions

Next weekend brings the release of Backrooms, which is currently tracking between $25 million and $50 million. That is an unusually wide range, reflecting both strong online awareness and uncertainty about how well that interest will translate into mainstream ticket sales.

The viral appeal behind the concept should help drive curiosity, particularly among younger audiences. A debut around $35 million feels like the most realistic outcome, which would still make it one of the stronger horror openings of the year.

As always, we’ll find out next week.
