Daemons of the Shadow Realm gives Yuru and Asa a very tense breakfast to look forward to in Ep. 8 “Suspicion and Conviction”. All with a whole bunch of lore dropped and many characters being explored for their motivations and goals, which all leads to some rather critical decisions on both Yuru’s and Asa’s parts. At the very least, their breakfasts are amazingly well-drawn and animated. To the point where you could mistake this episode as coming right out of a food-centric anime.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 8 “Suspicion and Conviction”: Details in Brief

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 8 “Suspicion and Conviction” is the eighth episode (you can read my reviews for Ep. 1, Ep. 2, Ep. 3, Ep. 4, Ep. 5, Ep. 6, and Ep. 7 here) of this dark fantasy action adventure anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist, Silver Spoon, The Heroic Legend of Arslan).
Bones Film (Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Ouran High School Host Club, My Hero Academia) is the animation studio behind this anime. Masahiro Andō is the director behind this anime, with Noboru Takagi as the writer, and Kenichiro Suehiro as the composer for the music.
Speaking of that music, the opening theme song for Daemons of the Shadow Realm is “Time to Fly” by Vaundy. Meanwhile, “Let’s Fly” by yama is the ending theme song.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 8 “Suspicion and Conviction”: The Good

As you can tell by the bit I added after the title, Ep. 8 “Suspicion and Conviction” is one tense breakfast. With Yuru (voiced by Kensho Ono (JP) and Ben Stegmair (EN)) and Asa (voiced by Yume Miyamoto (JP) and Molly Zhang (EN)) eating that breakfast amidst an atmosphere so tense that you can cut that tension with a knife and serve it with that very breakfast. All of that tension comes from a combination of character drama via interactions between what’s essentially a Higashi Village delegation and a Kagemori Family delegation, and plot-related drama as details emerge about what’s happening in the world and as the characters react to them and make decisions based on those revelations.
In this case, much of those decisions are Yuru making some rather firm decisions about essentially remaining neutral and independent in this war between Higashi and Kagemori, allowing him and his developing faction to become something akin to a local Switzerland. He basically declares loyalty to no one but himself and his sister, resulting in a technical neutrality that’s also a free-for-all on his life since he belongs to no side. It results in him…basically recreating the exact same situation he and his sister was in in their childhoods. However, the big difference here is that he’s taking on his share of her burden rather than just taking on all of the burden. He lives the free but dangerous life in the light, while she lives the safe but confined life in the shadows. Rather ironic there, and with a big dose of symbolism in their respective names.
Quality Breakfast Shoutout
Oh, and kudos to Bones Film’s animation team for making the breakfast itself look absolutely delicious. The detail on the food, which includes grilled salmon, assorted vegetables, and miso soup; isn’t the best, but it’s pretty close. The coloration on the salmon skin, in particular, clearly shows off the grilled coloration, complete with a texture that perfectly simulates that browned, crispy look. The fact that Yuru shows off so much enjoyment in eating the food, right down to the last grain of rice, only completes the deliciousness of that breakfast.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 8 “Suspicion and Conviction”: The Bad

Alas, for those of you here only for the action, Ep. 8 “Suspicion and Conviction” will probably bore you. There is not a single hint of action anywhere in this episode. The drama is quite palpable, but it’s most definitely not the action-packed bloody stories of some of the previous episodes. You will need to wait for future episodes for that, and maybe even as soon as the next episode. Especially given the hints of potential action we see in the final seconds of this episode that tease at the next one.
Anime Recommendations
Fortunately, you do have alternatives if you can’t wait for that bloody action. You can check out Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Kaiju No. 8, DDDD, DAN DA DAN, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II, Zenshu, Blue Box, Solo Leveling, Black Butler, Nyaight of the Living Cat, May I Ask for One Final Thing?, and/or TRIGUN STARGAZE for some of that.
