Post Summary

As a longtime fan of the franchise, walking into my interview for Mortal Kombat felt equal parts exciting and surreal. I didn’t hold back my enthusiasm when talking with stars Karl Urban and Josh Lawson.

After the explosive events of the first film, Mortal Kombat returns with higher stakes, brutal new battles, and the long-awaited arrival of Johnny Cage. As Earthrealm faces an even greater threat from Outworld, familiar warriors and deadly new fighters are forced into a battle that will determine the fate of multiple worlds.

At the center of the chaos is Johnny Cage, the cocky Hollywood action star whose arrival brings both humor and unpredictability to the fight. But beneath the arrogance lies a fighter who must prove he belongs alongside Earthrealm’s champions.

Mortal Kombat 2 is now playing in theaters!

Chatting with Karl Urban and Josh Lawson about Mortal Kombat 2!

Speaking with Karl Urban, I immediately pointed out the sheer range of major franchises he’s been part of. From The Lord of the Rings and The Boys to Star Trek and now Mortal Kombat, his résumé reads like a greatest hits list of modern IP. I joked that he was “collecting them like Pokémon,” but Urban was quick to downplay any grand strategy. “No, not at all,” he told me. “I haven’t planned this career in any great degree. I’m just blessed to have worked with some really, truly talented people.”

One of the more surprising reveals came when Urban discussed his return to the franchise. “I thought I was dead,” he said candidly. “I had accepted that. I’d grieved.” Learning he would be back was, in his words, “a very, very pleasant surprise.” His return isn’t just a continuation, though.

It was one of those interviews where you can feel the excitement on both sides. I meant it when I told them I’d hype this forever.
