Daemons of the Shadow Realm gives us no small amount of tail-shaking in Ep. 9 “Embrace and Whisper”. Some of the tail-shaking is from Yuru practically shaking his metaphorical tail like a puppy as he’s shown around a modern city for the first time in his life. Other tail-shaking is of a more espionage-related sort, where Yuru and Dera has to shake some tails that are tailing them. Alas, some of those tails are a bit too horrifying and violent to shake off.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 9 “Embrace and Whisper”: Details in Brief

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 9 “Embrace and Whisper” is the ninth episode (you can read my reviews for Ep. 1, Ep. 2, Ep. 3, Ep. 4, Ep. 5, Ep. 6, Ep. 7, and Ep. 8 here) of this dark fantasy action adventure anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist, Silver Spoon, The Heroic Legend of Arslan).
Bones Film (Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Ouran High School Host Club, My Hero Academia) is the animation studio behind this anime. Masahiro Andō is the director behind this anime, with Noboru Takagi as the writer, and Kenichiro Suehiro as the composer for the music.
Speaking of that music, the opening theme song for Daemons of the Shadow Realm is “Time to Fly” by Vaundy. Meanwhile, “Let’s Fly” by yama is the ending theme song.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 9 “Embrace and Whisper”: The Good
As always, Hiromu Arakawa has written a brilliant story for Ep. 9 “Embrace and Whisper”. It’s also a story that you can divide into two clear parts:
A Grand Day Out for Yuru

The first part of this episode is basically a nice grand day out for Yuru (voiced by Kensho Ono (JP) and Ben Stegmair (EN)) and his Daemons Left (voiced by Takako Honda (JP) and Colleen Clinkenbeard (EN)) and Right (voiced by Rikiya Koyama (JP) and Bill Butts (EN)), with Dera (voiced by Yuichi Nakamura (JP) and Jarrod Greene (EN)) showing all of them around the modern city. The result is another great example of what’s essentially a reverse isekai story. Yuru, Left, and Right are basically from a medieval Japan setting, so everything in the modern world baffles and excites them in turn, and sometimes both at once.
This reverse isekai story is also used to explore their personalities as well. We see Yuru hyper-focusing on how practical some aspects of modern clothing are like pockets…and then we also see him rejecting modern underwear out of preference for traditional Japanese fundoshi underwear. It’s those little contradictions that makes Yuru feel alive and human, with all of the flaws beautifully exposed.
Asa (voiced by Yume Miyamoto (JP) and Molly Zhang (EN)) isn’t left out of this either. While Yuru is out exploring the modern world, Asa is busy admiring all the photos she took of him…and ignoring everyone else in the photos. There’s something hilarious about Asa editing out every non-Yuru person in the photos and pretending that they never existed in the photo in the first place. Again, these little flaws and foibles makes Asa feel alive and human just as much as her brother.
A Not-So-Grand Day Out for Everyone Tailing Yuru

Alas, the slice of life reverse isekai must end at some point, but it ends in style. The latter half of this episode is basically a supernatural action-thriller as Yuru, Left, Right, and Dera deal with the ones tailing them. It’s the kind of quick and sudden action that you would find in a modern military thriller due to the quick actions needed to take out people with guns. It makes for scenes not unlike that in the John Wick movies, but with magic in them.
With all of that leading up to quite a plot twist at the end when some of the tails turn out to be quite horrifying indeed. It suddenly turns into a bloody supernatural horror when they show up, with some extreme levels of violence throughout the scene. Seriously, heads literally go flying in that scene, eager to satisfy the most slavering of action fans.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 9 “Embrace and Whisper”: The Bad

Alas, Ep. 9 “Embrace and Whisper” does end on a cliffhanger. It’s a fairly serious cliffhanger to boot, with the episode literally stopping in the middle of a bloody-horror scene to make us wait for the next episode before we find out what happens next. Here’s hoping that they can hold their breaths long enough for that.
